Advanced Certification in Integrative Acupuncture Physical Medicine

Upon completion of classes, participants will know and be able to:

Identify, assess, manage and refer serious/urgent medical conditions with emphasis on injuries, pain complaints, and the neurologic and musculoskeletal systems.
Recognize indications for referral from and to other physical medicine disciplines and modalities including physiatry, physical therapy, orthopedics, podiatry, neurology, osteopathy.
Recognize, understand and be able to treat chronic and systemic factors in pain, including:
- Neural hypersensitization
- Rheumatologic and immunologic conditions
- Endocrine imbalances
- Mood and sleep disorders
Educate patients and prescribe exercises for posture, gait and ergonomics correction, injury rehabilitation and prevention, cardio fitness, weight and mood management, and wellness.
Prescribe dietary, herbal and nutritional supplement therapies for pain, injuries, and mood, sleep and weight management.
Provide appropriate education, interventions and referrals for psycho-emotional, psycho-social and behavioral factors in acute injuries and chronic pain.

Upon completion of this class, students will know and be able to:

Apply modern science models of therapeutic mechanisms as well as clinical trials of acupuncture and other common AOM modalities to improve selection of cases and treatment plans, including treatment locations and techniques.
Present and discuss outcomes of clinical trials and meta-analyses of acupuncture and other common AOM modalities for neuro-musculo-skeletal pain and injuries of the spine and extremities as well as chronic and systemic pain.

Upon completion of classes, participants will:

Be familiar with various types and methods of medical documentation and communications, including electronic health records.
Be able to provide written reports and referrals regarding patient functional capacities, status, and progress for neuro-musculo-skeletal pain and injuries of the spine and extremities as well as urgent, chronic and systemic pain.
Be able to present and discuss cases verbally and engage in peer review and discussion at case conferences regarding neuro-musculo-skeletal pain and injuries of the spine and extremities as well as chronic and systemic pain.
Build and manage referral and consulation relationships with other medical professionals.

Upon completion of classes, participants will know and be able to:

Develop business plans, clinic policies and standard operating procedures.
Discuss the current regulatory environment and professional ethical codes for acupuncture and physical medicine.
Manage common risks in AOM clinical practice.
Be familiar with common skill and work requirements for integrative medical settings.

Didactic with aids: anatomical models, visual slides, cadaver labs and reference texts.
Demonstration and clinical observation.
Supervised, hands-on training and practical labs.
Required presentation and peer review/discussion of medical reports and case studies.
On-line clinical guidance and practice management documents and discussion forums.
